Full Version: Using MS Excel for preparing sales tax invoices

We started issuing sales tax invoices from August 2009.

Invoices are made using Microsoft Excel & we follow manual book keeping.

My sales tax consultant advice to use either manual hand made invoices or the invoices generated through proper accounting software. However the Sales tax officer is agreed with our current practice. Some other people in the industry are following the same practice, & to them there is no issue in preparing the Invoices using Excel.

I didn’t find any thing written in the law regarding this.

Please inform the implications, issues & consequences of our current practice

An early reply will be highly appreciated.

you can prepare sales tax invoice using excell but it should be according to the format specified in Sales Tax Act. But keep both soft copies and hard copies of invoices at your office. Mostly software do not generate invoices so you will need an expensive or customized software. Mostly companies using Peachtree use excel to generate vouchers and invoices.
Dear Awais,
