People Help me out - smraza - 11-11-2003

I am facing a stupid problem, I have just installed windows 2000 Prof. on my PC, my PC is P4 1.7 Ghz.
I have been using the windows98 before, so the system was comparative fast than while using win 2k, now i am fed up of win 2k, and i want to get rid off from this win2k, but i m unable to reinstall win98, even i cant restart my system in MSDos Mode (its a major problem in win2k), so i cant even format my Hard disk,
if i try to boot from win 98 bootable CD, it is not doing so,
and If i boot from win 2k CD then it starts the Setup again, and no option of getting rid off from this Devil Win 2000,
what should i do,
can anybody help me how can i reinstall win98.
I have only one windows on my pc at the moment which is win2000.

If u have 256 mb Ram or more, then i would recommend that u go for WinXp. It is the most stable and the best OS out there. If its less, then stick to win 98.

Actually you can't format you hard disk with win 98 'cos your hard disk has been converted to NTFS which is a native standard for Win2k/XP and performs much better than the old win32 standard of Win 98. Now i am not too sure on the method with which you can remove NTFS and reinstall win32. Maybe a low-level format and remaking the partition table using Fdisk might help.

And please... stay away from Win Me...!!!

You will be stuck somewhere in between Win 2k and win 98... and wont be good as any of the two. Just go for either win98 or win2k/xp.

First i would say its a surprise that win 2k is slow on p4. I would say first check the following
1. check your startup folder and see what kind of programs are run from it remove those which are not necessary.
2. perhaps u should download and install advanced uninstaller pro 2003 and do a little cleanup of your system. the software is trial but u can use full functionality for 20 days.
3. what kind of hard disk are u using. if its the one u got when u installed win98 then i would suggest upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive like seagate baracudda around Rs3500/20GB.
4. part of the problem lies in upgrading. i suspect u have upgraded instead of doing a clean install. if you had checked for a clean install, the installer would have installed 2k in a fresh directory. u could have then the option of dual-boot i.e win 98 (for games etc) or win 2k (for serious work) at startup. there are always problems if you upgrade an operating system as residual files remain and they cause havoc.
5. mind u that support for usb (printer, scanner, external drives including usb drives )and firewire (digital still and video cameras) is not very good in win 98 and microsoft had stopped supporting win 98. u will have difficulty in usb and firewire equipment if you have any. Also if u r doing any homenetworking then it will be a big fuss with win 98.. with xp or 2k its very easy.
6. As guybrush said u probably have ntfs which i must say u would have selected when upgrading to win2000 as it allows u to keep fat32.
ntfs and dos are not compatible therefore the command prompt u have in win2k (cmd.exe) is actually a win2k prompt not dos prompt.

if you have really decided to go back to win98 then follow these steps.
0. insert bootable CD or floppy of win 98
1. start your computer and press del or whatever key to reach your bios setup... change boot-drive sequence to removable and then fixed.
... if not so
2. boot with cdrom support enabled
3. run fdisk
4. delete all partitions (all data will be lost.. it will show unrecognised partition etc (i dont remember what it showed when i was experimenting with it which u will need to delete
5. create new partition which will be a primary dos and extended partition (C,D drives etc)
6. insert win98 cd and run setup from command prompt.
7. change the boot sequence in bios (not necessary but improves boot time)

i hope it will help

cheers

NB. just for information.. win2k has been voted the most stable operating system for servers for couple of years now while xp is being optimised. this is the reason MS has introduced longhorn

thanx, all people,
I havnt said that win2k is running slow on P4, I said it is comparatively slow than 98,
and I have found nothing special in win2k as far as my requirement is concerned,
So guybrush, I have 256 MB ram DDR technology,
and CBpian, I have changed the boot sequence, and tried to boot from win98 bootable CD, it says you cannot boot from the media older than windows 2000, (incorrect media for boot) so its not going in dos mode, if it goes in dos mode, then my all problems are solved, there will be no need to run Fdisk (to remove partition) as i can just format my C drive, and my format of C drive is on FAt 32 not on NTFS, as i selected the option of FAT 32 while upgrading to win 2000.

Now I got another idea to get rid off from this Devil 2k,
I m going to put the hard drive of my old P3 into P4 and will boot from the P3's hard disk, by assining it the Primary Master, then I ll format the P4's Hard drive while remaining in the windows, as you can format your slave drives even u are running your windows.
how is the idea ??????

ur idea is good and should work.
however its the same as booting from floppy/CD. normally it should boot although it may not be able to read the hard disk.
...anyway u can try with your old harddisk.. do not forget to reassign ur 2k disk as slave.. maybe need to change the jumper.
good luck.
... i once messed up with xp installation and was able to revert to win 98 although i must its all messy with 2000/XP to 98/Me/95 or vice versa.

Assalaam o alekum dear try this method out

1. Get a floppy / C D with boot power
2. Run fdisk or Disk Manager by sea gate
3. delete all the partitions of your drive
4. then format ur hard disk

thats it the method

but beware all the data of your hard disk will be destroyed

not know to fdisk or disk manager then contact me in person
