10 Brain Damaging Habits - Schuaeb - 09-20-2007

1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration. Avoid white sugar, juices, and white bread and get eggs, high fiber cereals or low fat cheese with one cup of coffee or tea.

2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, hypertension and small strokes leading to a decrease in mental power. See our articles about yo-yo dieting and losing weight.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease. With 4000 different chemicals per cigarette it should not be surprising.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will stimulate insulin secretion thereby causing reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar later)thus interfering with brain development.

5. Minimize Pollution
Minimize air pollution. The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency. Keep you AC in your car on "air recirculation mode" to avoid inhaling other car's fume.Avoid pesticides brought into your home and food.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. You are more likely to get good sleep if you avoid heavy late evening meals, avoid cafeine after 2PM, exercise 30 minutes every day and go to bed at the same time every night.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered, increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Drinking too much alcohol and taking too many drugs.
Avoid alcohol. Do not take Prozac and Valium unless absolutely necessary. Use antioxidants and rely instead on regular exercice to fight burn-out, stress and depression.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage. Never retire as long as you are in good health.

10. Talking Rarely - Intellectual conversations
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain. Decrease TV watching and computer games in favor of reading interesting books and being around intellectually stimulating people.

This stuff is widely present at a number of places on web. All the information present on the web, especially that is not linked with any author or displays the result of a survey, is not always very credible. However, in this case the reasons associated with the habits sound logical which at least has made me to believe this information correct.

Given this is the criteria of brain degeneration, then I think most of us including me do not have very healthy habits. Having no break fast is common, and most of people I know do not take breakfast regularly. Over eating, nicotine, high sugar consumption and irregular sleeping habits make the case with most of us.

I will conclude by saying such things can be over looked very easily. At least we should think of these and make the smallest effort of making our habits healthier.
