Standardised Spelling? ICAP?? Where are You? - TheOne - 05-11-2003

I've been surfing around for more than 8 years. Surely, I can refer you more than 100 sites that spell any single "Islamic" term in a different way. In these circumstances when we've got to rely upon "e" modes... why shouldn't we define "Standardised Definitions" of Islamic Terms????? Even at various forums at this site I read tens of spellings of "Assalam Olaikum" (Yes... this is how I spell it.. Can you prove it's wrong???)... But Why shouldn't we spell it globally in a same way and same manner????? It's not simply "Assalam Olaikum"... (For the time being I'll not mention anything about standard spellings of financial terms like "Mudarabah" ,Murabahah" , "Ijarah" etc. etc.) When it comes to Net & WWW, standard spelling means millions of dollars. I wonder, I go crazy, I go nuts when I see that none of my leaders in profession is doing nothing!!!!!... ICAP..!!! ICMAP... Where are you??? Is there anybody out there who thinks alike???...

Bhai!

I agree to u, we must standardise the spelling especially the words that relates to muslims, as there r two or three spellings that I have seen of Muhammad, but I have heard that Internationally it was accepted and agreed on MUHAMMAD. like wise we should agree on spellings we use, and the way is that a religious board or an institution should be made which should by consensus standardize the spellings.

Definately got the point in the very first reply <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Never seek advice from a Chartered Accountant. They are trained to find problems not solutions.

Nice feedback and very very nice suggestion… as you said that "a religious board or an institution should be made which should by consensus standardize the spellings"…. and for this as we have seen over years the procedure would be somehow like this…
(1) A high level committee should be formed comprising of Linguistic Experts, Religious Scholars, Lawyers and Banking & Financial Experts.
(2) Such Committee should conduct meetings and debate regarding inclusion or exclusion of "terms, names and words" for standardisation process;
(3) Then detailed recommendations should be prepared that there's sufficient and reasonable need for establishment of a "Religious Board", an "Institution" or a "Standard Spelling Authority" in the country;
(4) Since only Pakistanis do not use spellings, so, it would be most appropriate & logical to involve all Islamic countries in the process and ask their representation in the said Authority. A special envoy should be sent to all muslim countries for the purpose. OIC would also be given due importance in this vital issue.
(5) It'll also be a matter of importance to decide that where should the Head Quarteres for proposed body be based. Probably, Geneva would be most likely choice;
(6) Suppose this is all done within next 5 years, then the matter of funding of "Project" would arise that'll require another 2 to 3 years, to resolve.
(7) By that we shall probably in year 2010 and a lot of concerned people would be skeptical about utility of project anymore and would demand abandonment of it.
Dear Asif, was it this what you suggested? Perhaps you know that "Boards" in our country haven't been able to translate even the word "Board"?? Look at "Muqtadirah Urdu Board"!!!!
Alternatively, I think that ICAP & ICMAP can delegate this job to one of their numerous technical committees who can compile a list of "Banking and Financial" muslim terms and standardise their spellings. Somehow I believe that there is still a lot there which can do this job. A vetting may be sorted from known scholars and lawyers and finally a technical release may announce agreed spellings of such terms. By involving educational institutions and publishers and media, it can be done more quickly at least in Pakistan. Let the world do whatever it does, at least we can lit a candle of our own and have light.
Otherwise you know, you can see Muslims, inspired from western media and modernism have started writing themselves as "Moslims". They write "Qur'an" as "Koran"…they don't say Salaat, they call it prayers...perhaps, these are divine words and people can not pronounce them way people like. Where'll it end?? I see it like distortion of names, characters and "Identity Marks"…majority of us still writes "God" instead of "Allah"….. for me God and Allah are not the same thing…and only one argument is sufficient that there's no "feminine" gender for "Allah" but there are thousands of Goddesses around. Perhaps you can imagine where these distortions will lead us if nothing is done to stop them?
