No sales tax return filing at bank without online service

ISLAMABAD (November 09 2005): The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has decided to withdraw the facility of filing of sales tax returns at National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) branches operating without online service.

In this connection, the CBR on Tuesday issued instructions to all collectors of sales tax to submit the particulars of NBP branches not having online facility, asking the collectors to give immediate feedback for de-notification of such branches.

Once the CBR collects information from the field formations, it will amend SRO 952(I)/98 excluding the names of all these branches. SRO 952(I)98 deals with the designated branches of NBP operating in different cities to receive sales tax pertaining to the taxable activity carried out by taxpayers within the jurisdiction of respective collectorate of sales tax.

A CBR official said that NBP branches having online facility would ensure prompt transfer of tax details to the national kitty and also help in resolving the reconciliation problem between the banks and tax officials. In the past, the CBR has been asking NBP to check double reporting of revenue collection by its branches for proper reconciliation of revenue receipts.

The CBR, SBP and NBP had worked out new accounting/reporting mechanism for reconciliation of revenue receipts to check gross variations in the reporting figures.
