Revenue Board clarification: 15 percent sales tax chargeable on supply of ghee and cooking oil

ISLAMABAD (July 18 2003) : The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has clarified for the convenience of general public and business community that 15 percent sales tax is chargeable on supply of ghee and cooking oil irrespective of registered or unregistered persons.

Furthermore, CBR has not made any change in the sales tax rate on vegetable ghee/cooking oil since June 2002.

In this regard, the CBR has issued a press release here on Thursday clarifying reports on charging 18 percent sales tax on supply of ghee.

Giving the factual position, the CBR observed that sales tax at the rate of 15 percent is chargeable on supply of ghee and cooking oil irrespective of sales tax registered or unregistered persons.

The CBR has further clarified that 15 percent general sales tax (GST) was levied on ghee and cooking oil in June 2002 and not in the current financial year ie 2003-04.

No change in the rate of sales tax on vegetable ghee and cooking oil has been made since June 2002, CBR added.
