Karachi East, West sales tax and central excise duty collectorates merged

ISLAMABAD (September 07 2003) : To facilitate the manufacturers of excisable commodities in Karachi, the government has asked all central excise duty paying units to take tax matters to the combined Collectorate of Sales Tax and Central Excise, Karachi.

The CBR has merged the Collectorates of Karachi (East and West) into a single Collectorate through an SRO(I)/2003 issued here on Saturday.

According to the notification, the units operating under the Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU), Karachi, would not be covered under the said decision and they would continue to operate within the jurisdiction of LTU.

Sources said that some of the units were facing difficulties due to the location of Collectorates of Karachi (East and West) which was creating procedural difficulties.

Now, the unification of these collectorates would benefit all such industrial units of Karachi.

The CBR has amended Central Excise Rules 1944 to notify the decision by exercising powers under section 37 of the Central Excise Act 1944.
