Revenue Board starts sales tax arrears recovery from short-filers

ISLAMABAD (February 15 2003) : The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has started
recovery of sales tax arrears from hundreds of short-filers who paid less tax in
December 2002 compared to departmental estimates, sources told Business Recorder
on Friday.
These short-filers include businessmen, industrial units, registered persons and
traders belonging to different sectors.
The CBR has compiled ten different lists of short-filers, which will be provided
to collectors of sales tax, Karachi (East) and (West), Hyderabad, Lahore,
Faisalabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan and Quetta.
The CBR has informed all collectors of sales tax that the lists contain the
amount payable, actual amount paid and due amount to be deposited by the
taxpayer.
The CBR has compiled the tax figures after processing sales tax returns of
taxpayers submitted by the collectorates of sales tax.
The regional authorities would verify these figures by comparing them with the
actual returns available at the collectorates.
The CBR has asked the authorities to initiate necessary proceedings against the
taxpayers for the recovery of short-paid amount after confirmation of less
payment by scrutinising the data available.
Sources said that the new sales tax registration rules, to be notified in
February 2003, would effectively deal with different categories of taxpayers
including short-filers, non-filers and nil-filers under the restructuring plan.
