I just received this from a MENSA group. Check this out

KEDA and sindh police in collaboration with Mobile zone is introducing a web-based computerized system through which a stolen mobile phone can be tracked. This system is designed in wake of high rise in mobile snatching crime and its easily selling in open mobile market. A web based system will help user to launch it’s complain of mobile phone theft from any where on given website address. It will shorten the time to stop reselling of that stolen mobile set in open market. Every shop owner has to verify from the website or the phone numbers provided by KEDA before purchasing any used mobile set.
Its operation is very simple and user friendly. Internet is available every where so it’s very easy to make complain on website first, and then register F.I.R at police station. User has to submit F.I.R number on the website after launching the initial complain of snatching of mobile set in which he or she has to submit the IMEI number to mobile phone. A stolen mobile can only be tracked from its IMEI number which is written on back side of mobile set or after dialing *#06# from any mobile set. All users have to keep this number at safe place or remember and mention that number while launching complain of mobile theft on website or KEDA phone numbers.

A mobile seller has to confirm the purchase to used mobile phone either from website or from KEDA phone numbers. Special phone numbers are given on which they can check either mobile set is stolen or not, by giving IMEI number of that set. All shop owners have to take information of the person who is selling used mobile phone. A printed book will be issued to all shop owners and after verifying from either website or from KEDA phone numbers, he has to submit that receipt at KEDA office. By all this, a comprehensive data of snatched mobile phones will be developed and it will be very easy to catch thieve when he comes to sell snatched mobile phone in market.

Do u guys think that this system will work? I dont think any other country has experimented with this kind of system, or has it? What about the UK & UAE? Is mobile theft common there too, Pracs & Azeem Shah Khan sahib ?

I don't know the whole picture of mobile theft in the UK but there are certain areas in London where mobile theft is a bit norm. A recent survey suggested that these thefts tend to take place more in economical deprived areas - an example of such is Lambeth region. Lambeth, an area in London, is also known for centre of drug trafficing.

Dear AvgJoe

as DT mentioned "mobile picking" is not as common in UK as it is in some parts of Pakistan and specially in Karachi.

i haven't noticed any Hi-Tech mobile tracking procedures here in London. In councils like Lambeth Council which covers Brixton (dodgy area) and Streatham (where i live) some cases have been reported. i have seen some warning speakers put near the Train/Tube stations warning the pedestrians to be cautious of mobile and pocket pickers.

actually mobiles are now so cheap that nobody even bothers reporting such incidences to police and i guess thats the reason our local police haven't adopted any hi-fi procedure.

Kind Regards

Well many people dont bother to report even car & house theft in Pakistan, leave alone mobile theft. This is not because such things come cheap but because of our police system!

Azeem bhai, how are the mobile phones in UK cheap? Here a decent camera phone easily costs Rs.20000 to 25000.Now for u it may be only 200 pounds but for us its a lot. Hardly any one carries Rs.25000 in his wallet, so snatching a small & easily saleable mobile phone (which people like to show off) has became a pretty rewarding occupation. I heard, mobile phones abroad are cheap because they come bundled with connections. Is this true?

That's true and competition between several operators has really knocked down the prices - a good thing for consumer prospective.
A five hundred minutes any time any network contract (of course limited to UK calls) costs these days less than £5 a month.

DT

very true, phones are quite cheap here specially if u get a package deal from one of the many networks here. since i m not really into this stuff i dont exactly know who is offering what. i use simple PAY AS YOU GO (similar to prepaid Jazz connection) on Orange Network and i m quite happy with my Nokia Ngage set which gives me an option to listen to songs saved on its memory card so i dont have to carry MP3 player.

I heard that network "3" is offering Free camera phones with 500 Free minutes anytime any network for i think £12.5 per month.

I don't think the local police in the Emirates have to even bother about ''mobile snatching'' here or for that matter vehicle snatching (We rarely here a car theft case !) Any body who's been to the Emirates (Dubai etc.) can vouch for the fact how safe place this is. I myself usually forget my mobile in restaurants and then scurry back to get it. Plus we always find our vehicles where we park them (yes finding a place to park is beginning to get difficult)....

Azeem and DT,.. i read an article about rampant ''mobile crimes'' in the UK some time ago, I gather its mostly done by druggies !! But that was some time a go...! yeah mobiles are a lot more cheaper these days...
