Hey. I'm doing a paper on women in the medical field, and I had a few questions to ask people regarding the topic. First, what field of medicine do women most commonly enter and why? Second, is there any reason for the surge of women now comming into the medical field other than issues of equality(i.e. has there been a major female breakthrough that encourages women to enter the field)? Anyways, i believe that increasing number of women entering medicine these days doesnt have anything to do with any breakthrough. I guess its more of an image thing. Medicine, like accounting and teaching is seen as a comparatively risk-free field and a profession which is not much affected by economic ups and downs. Its been seen that even in a recession, people working in the said professions are economically stable and their money-making abilities do not get affected that much. I feel that its more to do with job stability and economic reasons than anything else.

as u are from US...I dont know the aptitude of women there...
but here in Pk...women are not good in mathematics and accounting...but their memory is really sharp...that is required in the field of Medicine...

Don't you think that is a bit of a generalisation, saying women are not good at maths, some are good at maths, some are not and it is nothing to do with gender. You saying that is like me saying that Pakistani men aren't intelligent compared to English, i'm sure you would be one of the first to refute that. (I'm not saying that is what I think, just using it as an example).

interesting topic!!! lot of men women in my family r doctors. i ve realized tht most felames in the profession of medicine prefer 'medicine' over 'surgery' for the purpose of specialization afetr the MBBS. reason generally quoted is tht surgeons r full-time-on-job ppl. so it gets somewht difficult for females, bcoz they also bear responsibilities towards their family, particularly, after marriage. but in case of taking 'medicine' faor specialization, they can spare time for home, n kidds also. n they can, at least, continue practicing in clinics if the family affairs donot allow long hours of job in hospital.
i dont think tht trend in females is 'increased' towards medicine. it was the same in earlier times also. however, since greater number of medical colleges r available today as compared to past, more females get in the medical colleges.
