Dear members,

I have recently heard that the Actuarial Qualifications are considered as equivalent to PhDs in any Financial Discipline. However, I remember once Guybrush wrote that ACCA, CMA etc. (accountancy qualifications) are now considered as equivalent to Master level.

What are your views about the Actuarial Qualifications that whether are they equivalent to PhD level?

DT

Hi DT

Where did u get this info from? Can u quote the source and the announcement?

hi derivative,
i'm not sure if the SOA qualifification is universally recognized as equal to Phd, but i do know that the ICAP was negotiating with the HEC to recognizee the CA qualification as equal to PHD, but it hasn't been accepted so far. however the HEC has accepted CA from ICAP as equal to masters degree recently (ICAP newsletter may 2003). i'm not sure what the HEC says about ACCA so far, but the oxford brookes degree is finally recognized.
our commerce minister Humayun Akhtar seems to be one hell of a guy! pretty cool and impressive. and all the study didnt affect his health, looks and hair! thats the best part! ) may we follow in his footsteps...

then our ICAP friends will be amongst the list of Hajis, doctors and generals. They will be called Dr. Guybrush (hope my friend guybrush will excuse me taking liberty)

Hope ICAP will then attempt military status to call as Lt. General X.

but good thing is that many icap members must have been already calling themselves as Haji X.

Pakistan will be the only and first nation in the globe. Good for the country image as well.

what on earth...?
dont take it so personally yaar! why dont you ask your professional body, whichever it is, to consider appealing for PHD level recognition to the HEC too?
ICAP entered negotiations only because they thought there was some weightage to the claim, keeping in view the professional competence, excellence and knowledge of qualified memebers of ICAP. why else would they consider it?
and whats the infatuation with haj and the military...?

Hi DT

You r right, My name is zubair.

I dont take things personally. its quite ok if you have a different opinion. But as I said earlier, users do expect that members speak solid and be ready for criticism.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Tahoma, Arial" id=quote>quote<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> to consider appealing for PHD level recognition to the HEC too<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Tahoma, Arial" size=2 id=quote>

no, if ACCA makes a move towards this end, I will attempt to block such a move. why? PhD is a research based qualification. In ACCA there is no research involved which is paralell to the Level of PhD research. so I dont support any such move.

but good luck to ICAP

I totally agree with Zubair. After all, PhD is gained after 3-5 years of extensive research and production of original / creative piece of work, whereas, in the case of professional qualifications I doubt any creativity, with the exception of some new / updates technical knowledge.

DT

Yeah... agreed with Zubair and DT

These are the sort of moves which reduce the value of a degree/qualification. It will even further reduce the value of the Pakistani Phd which currently, i must say, already aint much.

and yes... i will do everything in my power to block such illogical move by the higher education commission or ACCA.

Thank you for taking time and considering my query. However, what is the outcome now, did my source get it wrong or whether me, Zubair and GuyBrush?

People ... people.
what is it with you.
PhD is a research qualification, and although from the profession I wont even support getting CA equivalent to that... do we theorise and publish new reseach in accounting and auditing?... certainly not.
Our PhD has really no value internationally and what benefits would it bring , if for the matter of argument it is considered equivalent to any professional qualification... including ACCA.
... mind you my friends ACCA and CIMA are considered bachelor qualification in UK.
ICAP should try to get CA recognised as masters, for a start internationally... rather than getting HEC equivalencies which are .....what the heck....

CA is recognised as Masters...

Secondly, although ICAP doesn't have reciprocal membership with ICAEW and others, but it holds a lot of significance world wide... Thats probably a statement of experience as it is exactly what I have been told by various professionals... Don't know whether its totally true or not... Some have gone ahead to say that after ICAEW comes ICAP.
