INDEPENDENCE DAY - Moamar Qazafi - 08-15-2011

Pakistan emerged out of the Indian sub-continent from British rule onto the map of the world in 1947. The country has a majority of Muslim population. The word 'Pakistan' has been coined from the names of those regions that make up this nation - Punjab, Afghan Border States, Kashmir, Sind and Baluchistan. Even after 1947, Pakistan remained a dominion for nine years. It was only on the 23rd of March, 1956, that the country was declared an Islamic Republic. Pakistan celebrates its independence on the 14th of August every year. The day is a national holiday in Pakistan and is celebrated all over the country with flag-raising ceremonies, trib-utes to national heroes and fireworks. The main celebrations take place in Islamabad, where the President and Prime Minister raise the national flag at the Presidential and Parliament buildings and deliver speeches that are televised live. In their speeches, leaders highlight the achievements of the government, goals set for the future and in the words of the father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam, bring "Unity, Faith and Discipline" to its people.

People all over Pakistan celebrate Independence Day with patriotic zest. Many people who attended Independ-ence Day parades would dress up in green and white, which are the Pakistani flag’s colors. People visit na-tional monuments and places of national significance to celebrate Independence Day. This is also a time to meet relatives, exchange gifts and visit recreational spots.

Pakistan’s national flag is hoisted on public, private buildings, residences and monuments at dawn. Official buildings, including Parliament House, are decorated and colorfully lit. The prime minister and president ad-dress and congratulate the nation and talk about the day’s significance. Streets and houses are decorated with candles, oil lamps and pennants. Firework shows are put together on the eve of Independence Day.

Events held during the day include special theater shows, national song competitions, concerts, and Independ-ence Day pageants. Radio and televi-sion stations broadcast national songs and specially prepared Independence Day programs.
