Change in SOA and IOA papers (Education Redesign) - Apocalypse - 09-27-2004

There is news that there will be new syllabus for SOA and IOA and CAS from May,2005.

SOA and CAS have introduced four prelimanary exams

1.Probability
2.Mathematics of Finance
3.ACTUARIAL MODELS
4.CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION OF ACTUARIAL MODELS

after one passes all these four papers how many will remain

because by the previous syllabus they have eliminated

Calculus from paper 1
Economics from paper 2

will they test these at later stages or not

hi. apart from the 4 exams u mentioned u have to either show the soa that u have taken courses in economics, corporate finance and applied statistics from a good university or u can give their exams which will be offered in nov.2005, apart from that there will be a fap course which replaces papers 5 and 6, u can get this inormation from the www.soa.org site. if u have any further questions please ask me. take care.

Come on now

i would like to invite the attention of our specialised members like sumaan, dervative trader, actuary 2b, quarterback, syed

in this topic really this is very crucial for students starting their career in acturial sciences

i guess my information was of no help to acocalypse. well i am pursuing a career in actuarial science, but i am new to the field, i'm taking the soa course 1 exam next month. but i've done a lot of research on the education redesign, but i guess u want information from the senior members of the forum. calculus will no longer be examined, and the course one exam will only be probability. calculus questions will no long be asked in later exams. economics and corporate finance has been deleted from the second exam, the second exam is now only interest theory. the third exam is almost the same, applied statistics has been deleted from the fourth exam. plus u have to show the soa that u have taken courses in economics, corporate finance and applied statistics from a good university, or u can give special exams which will be offered in nov.2005 and which will be different from the soa course 1-4 exams. this new process is called vee, validation by education process. the new syllabi and information on education redesign is available on www.soa.org, do visit the site acocalypse it will really help you. lets hope senior members also comment on this issue. i know u dont want information from me acocalypse but if u have any questions u can ask me

that was a bunch of news thanks adnan,

if you pass course 1 now what exemption will you get in the new syllabus.

i also thought of attempting course 1 in nov 2004, but after the education redesign news i stopped because the calculus you study will be of no use later, so now i will prepare for SOA course 1 and 2 for june 2005,

are there any manuals avaliable for these courses and even if they are avaliable they will be very expensive. statelife will of course not provide these new manuals for photocopy as they are doing now

so if you can tell your location then i know few people who can pool the money and order the manuals

i will also hire teachers for course 1 and 2 in december, so if any body wants to study for these courses ( i think adnan will go for course 2 in june) they can combine as it reduces the charges of the teacher per head.

is university of Karachi is listed in that recognised universities.

only combined we students can make ourselves at ease in the study of acturial science.

yes u are right apocalypse, we have to work together. well i live in lahore so i wont be able to attend the classes, about ku being in the list of uni's well i'll look into that because i planned to give the exams which will be offered in nov.2005 for those subjects, so i didn't look into the university stuff. there is a manual called bpp which provides free notes for the first exam which are very useful, the site is www.bpp.com. they also provide free notes for one third of the second, third and fourth exams so do download it. also download the past 5 year exams from www.soa.org, they are very helpful. if u need any other help do ask friend. we are in this together. all people who have passed course one exam before the redesign dont have to give the exam again. take care

The site www.bpp.org has old syllabus study guides arent there study guides for the new syllabus.

- adnan24 - 10-14-2004

the study guides for the new syllabus will be advertised and sold after the last old course one exam in november 4. one book which is recommended in the new syllabus is available in karachi urdu bazaar, it is 'a first course in probability' by sm ross, it is a pirated edition and costs 100 rupees. the bpp study manual notes will still be useful because the probability course hasn't changed, so i recommend downloading it. anyone who wants the new syllabus or an article on education redesign can e-mail me adnan271k@hotmail.com. take care
