CA, or MBA (from Lums or US ?) - AvgJoe - 10-26-2004

Hi,
I am currently doing A-levels from Karachi Grammer School in Pakistan. I got 11 A's in my O-levels & I am supposed to choose a career now. But I am confused. I have a zest for accounts (got 99% in O-levels) & business subjects in general. So, I thought about the following options

1) Doing Chartered Accountancy (CA)
2) MBA from Lums / IBA
3) MBA from a "good" US university

After completing education, I want to remain in Pakistan. In your opinion, which option should I take ?
I'll be highly obliged to anyone, who expressed his opinion.

Thanks in advance !

If you plan to be in Pakistan and 'accounts' is your interests, then I must recommend CA to start with, no doubt about it. For CA is the prime 'accounting' degree in Pakistan. There are other options as in ACCA and CIMA but I think with your academic record you must aim for CA with a articles with a Big 4 accountancy firm. The rest can follow.

LUMS or US degree is recommendable only if you plan a career in Banking (operations and credit).

I myslef am a chartered accountant working for a Bank in Internal audit. Hope this helps you out

salaam all

mr. AvgJoe, my opinion iz tht option#03 (US degrees) iz best by any means. then comes option#02, n then the option#01.

option 3 iz best irrespective of whether u stay in pakistan or not. specially if u plan for Harvard or LSE of UK etc.

option 2 is also very good but if u stay in pakistan, but somewht not best for abroad; although LUMS stands best business school of pakistan in asian rating. n no doubt, IBA n LUMS graduates r on top executive positions in pakistan

option #1 is also good but it shall take a longer route. but i donot discourage u from opting it, these r just my views abt these three options.

Thanks a lot for the help farhan. My school really encourages us to go abroad, but somehow living abroad doesnt attract me. Then again, getting into Harvard @ undergraduate level is damm difficult for Pakistani students holding the "famous" green passport !

salaam all,

yes AvgJoe, i agree tht green passport is facing tough time these days, specially since after 9/11.
option to stay abroad doesnot appeal to me also) so i think tht IBA or LUMS will b better option. they r the HARVARD of pakistan) both of these, specially IBA, r "time-proven", as one of the senior manager said. track records, performance, market value etc of these r very promising. plus tht they r highly rewarding in terms of salary n other perks. all the graduates, whom i know, started the job at extremely good packages. so, my advice is IBA, and then LUMS.

Something relevant to the topic........enjoy

This particular joke won an award for the best joke in a competition organized in Britain and this joke was sent by an Indian......

A MBA and a CA go on a camping trip, set up their tent, and fell asleep. Some hours later, the CA wakes his MBA friend. “Look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

The MBA replies, "I see millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?"

The MBA ponders for a minute.

"Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three.
Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.
Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"

The CA is silent for a moment, and then speaks. "Practically...Someone has stolen our tent!"

It was lucky that there was not a computer programmer there because he would have said

" Digitally speaking, it tells me that my eyes have acquired an ability to see through objects otherwise our tent would have blocked my view from the sky.

if u want to get knowledge practically and also theoritically than CA is best.a CA have lot of knowledge and application so reputable ...CA is having two main feaures
1.more knowledge and application than mba.
2.more chances of getting higly paid and good good
