importance of reference in Big Three - bilal azhar - 01-09-2005

can a student go in big firms like FERGUSON,Ford rhodes, kpmg etc without a reference.

Inspite of all the hype, if you have a good scholastic record, nobody can stop you from entering these top firms. Reference is the tool for the ones who don't do good academically.

Agreed with Guybrush,. reference may be important,. but if you have a high flying academic record and have the committment to be a part of the profession, nothing can stop you

I have a slightly different view.

People do enter with references, but a lot of people only enter by openly competing with the people who come with references in their back pocket.

adding to what has been said above, references may help someone get into a firm but entry is not everything one wants, one has to prove his 'presence' which can only be done if you know your stuff.

dear bilal, you keep up your hard work and InshAllah you will soon get the benefits.

Does the 'reference' here means safarish or reference here means an account on candidate's personality from previous employers etc.?

we mean Sifaarish

MY dear friend and seniors I have to say with great sorrow that there is no word of merit in pakistan. Here i am going to narrate the happenings of my two friends who passed CA inter in last attempt. Both of them passed inter in losing just one attempt(two and half years).
* when they entered the doors of Kpmg the first question they were asked was about the reference and when they both said no, the recipcionist asked them to put there CVS on the desk and they will call them if required.after that no call has come.
* when they were called for interview in AF Ferguson, the interviewer marked the form of the student who had a referencea and said to the responsible person that when final assesment would be made, please call me when this form comes up.They both were rejected along with other 4 students who also didnot have a reference.AND one more thing, the person whose form was marked passed, the CA INTER in four years.

*AND my dear forum members u will be surprised to know what happened in Ford Rhodes.THey said to them,"why we hire u.we will have to pay stipend to u.we will only hire acca students who did not get any stipend."

where is merit?

In my time, the first preference for all top firms used to be students who had an excellent academic record + they had passed CA-Inter/Foundation in the first attempt. After them, it was the turn of the ones who had passed excellent record + 2nd attempt and so on and so forth.

Inform this to ICAP. They would be most interested to learn about this change of mindset.

These days the criteria has changed.now preference is given to a person having a good safarsh.NO attention is paid to academic record and the no of attempts.

I m an ACCA student, just given CORE ATTEMPT(last 3 papers) in Dec, and awaiting for results.
I submitted the form in FRSH and KPMG in Sept 2004, when I was doing preparations for Core Attempt. I cleared all the papers in first attempts. This all info is necessary so U can realize wht the audit firms want.

1. KPMG they did nt call me for interview. ( I know some of ACCA students in KPMG, who r part II students, and doing articleship for 1-2 years. How KPMG selected them ???

2. FRSH I gave thier test, that was not so bad, I answered wrongly the questions of Taxation and I think one from Auditing. I received a call thenafter, but in whole interview the manager kept advising me to do CA and for joining FRSH after 6 months, is'nt confusing. (There r so many ACCA students in FRSH, including one I know , who joined them after doing BCOM .... YES BCOM.

After all, wht can I say, I have said too much.

Dear MD,

What did he meant by "do CA & join FRSH after 6 months" ?

Now for some reasons a new trend is growing in the big firms. They are prefering Acca students over CA students.

There is also problem with registration of the ca students.firms like Ford rhodes takes 4 to 5 months to register a student.
Surely, some sort of check should be applied by the Icap regarding hiring of students, their registration process and especially why CA firms are prefering acca students.
