IT Graduate to ACCA - jen_23 - 08-09-2003
I am 22 years old and have BSC (Hons)Computer Science. When I started working in IT field as a Programmer for 1 year I realise that I had made a wrong choice when I was 18 of studying a Computer Science degree. Thus, I switched to other field where currently I am working as an Admin Executive which allows me to do some basic accounting.
I feel that I need recognition and plan to take ACCA (part-time) in the next year's intake. I do not have aim to be a CA. It's just that I hope to be a Finance Manager in the future.
I wonder am if I making the right choice. Some people advise me not to look back and go ahead with my decision but I am afraid to make the same mistake like a few years ago of studying the wrong course. Hope to get some advice.

Yes, Jen_23, go on and join ACCA but dont forget to join Classes for ACCA.

Being an IT or in fact graduate of any other background and then studying accountancy is not an unknown concept here in the UK. The concept of CIO (Chief information officer) is of finance people who are also involved in IT decisions. If anything, your IT background would make you a great asset to any company. Your IT background will give you the added advantage of understanding the strategic benefits of IT and information systems, in addition to being able to manipulate and extract the vast amounts of data that ERP/accounting and information systems hold. Your combination of skills will open up potentially new opportunities too. The narrow days of being either an arts person or a science person are gone. The modern era is about multi-skilling. We are not tick bashers or book-keepers, our profession is about thinking strategically and utilising IT to the benefit of our organisations. Inshallah you have made the right decision.

Yup... Try ACCA... After completing ACCA you'll be able to visualize other broader career certifications and qualifications like CIA, CISA, CIMA, etc...
So first just complete that, and if you have enough strength left in you, you can look for more qualifications.
