My question is that,

1. I would like to find a job of auditor when I get to Winnipeg, do you know the circumstances of CA firms in Winnipeg or other similar cities in Canada? Because I do not think Winnipeg is a large city with lots of jobs. Do I have to get a CICA certificate? and How to get it if I were a CGA? Can I get some papers exempt?

2.I have an option, if I become ACCA member, I can access to ACA and become an ACA member within 2 years. Then I transfer to CICA without further tests. Do you think it is feasible? I have heard that becoming a CICA needs Canadian CPA firms admission and experience, which is not easy to get in Canada.

Please give me some advice in CICA certificate. I regard it as a good tool to get a good job. And I really would like to get some soft skills and become a helpful worker when I get Canada. What
should I prepare now?

Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Sunny

Dear

1. I don't know much about the job market in Winnipeg as I live in Ontario. You may join public accounting firm as CGA, however, if you need to get CA designation, generally following could be the requirements. Though following is the link of ICAO Ontario, but usually requirements remain similar. http//www.icao.on.ca/Admissions/CGAsCMAs/1010page1355.aspx

2. To get CICA reciprocity with ICAEW, one should be a member through final exams BEFORE immigrating to Canada. Please see details.

I hope it helps.

<br />Dear TORONTO_BOY
i am new in this thread. i am delighted to see that u have made such an effort to help ACCAs plan ahead.

i am from Bangladesh (currently living in UK & have applied for PR in Canada)

in UK, after we complete ACCA, we can get a Masters degree from a UK university (not a top level but these unis are recognised in UK) for around £2,000 pound. I have done my ACCA, done almost 3 year's work experience (so planning to apply for membership very soon) but i don't have any previous Uni degre from anywhere.

the reason i am so eager to know about uni degree coz i am planning to take the CGA membership through ACCA-CGA MRA as advised by u. i know i can submit the Oxford Brookes project to get the BSC degree which will help me to get the CGA membership. i have already submitted the project but my fear is that if i fail my project i won't have enough time to redo the project & resubmit as i will have to move to Canada b4 the Canadian PR visa expires.

so, do u have any knowledge of any college/ uni in Canada from where i can get the Honours/ Masters degree with a affordable price like UK (as i mentioned on top for around £2,000 pound)? this will really help me out as i am really scared to move to Canada just with ACCA membership & having to wait/ spend a lot of money to gain the CGA membership just because i don't have any uni degree.......

please help me, bother, if u can.....

Dear

I think there is a residency requirement these days that an immigrant on Permanent Resident status would have to live in Canada for 2 years out of 5 years. You may also submit your project for Oxford Brooks even from Canada. After that, once you have all requirements satisfied for CGA then you may apply for CGA after landing here.

I don't think you may get any related masteres dergree here in Canada in equivalent of British Pounds 2,000. So, if your PR is expiring then you may land here, then go back to UK and complete Masters degree and come back with-in 3 years to complete remaining 2 years mandatory requirement. Please note that I am not confirmed about this 2 out of 5 year requirement. So confirm it before doing anything.

As I said, masters degrees are more costly than BP 2,000. So, if I would be you, I would do it in UK using 2 out of 5 years residency requirement. Though choice is yours. I don't know any ligitimate Canadian University which offers masters degree at this much low cost. Please do some online search.

Moreover, if your other options are riskier, then why don't you spend more time and efforts on Oxford Brooks project to pass with surety.

I hope it helps.

Best Wishes

Dear Toronto_Boy,
I’m from Russia. I’m 31 years old with master degree in economics. I have been working in investment/finance field for the last 6 years. In June 2010 I failed to pass CFA Level 2 exam. I expect that I will immigrate to Canada at the end of 2011. My English is not so good as it must be for Canadian professional labour-market. From my point of view it is better to start to improve my English instead of preparing for the CFA Level 2 in June 2011. I think it is better to have perfect/very good English including CFA Level 1 instead of bad English and CFA Level 2. What can you say on this matter?
Do you think it is a big difference between Level 1 and Level 2 for Canadian employer?
Thanks in advance!

- Toronto_Boy - 10-22-2010

Dear romius

You need "working" English. It means that people understand what you are saying or writing. Conversational English is most important because more than 95% of time you would be communicating orally. So, practice speaking English as much as you can.

One easy way is to start thinking and repeating in English whatever thoughts comes into your mind.

Both the tasks are important i.e. L2 and conversational English. L2 is off-course better than L1 for Canadian employers, but at the same time you need to communicate with employers and people around you.

I hope it helps.

Best wishes

Dear Toronto Boy

I need some guidance and I will appreciate if you could reply my following questoins.

I am landed immigrant in canada and now working in bahrain and want to go back again to canada in next 6 months to 1 year.

I have CA(Pak) and few other professional certifications like CIA etc. but my core experience is in accountancy and banking. I am looking forward to do accounting certification from canada but based on my discussions with my freinds in canada, there are no exemptions and i have to follow the long track. Could you please comment?

Moreover, i have concluded to go for CPA, i will appreciate if you could also refer any US state which accept CA(pak) as entry eligibility, if any.

Thanks and Best Regards

Taimoor

- Toronto_Boy - 10-23-2010

Dear Taimoor

Welcome to Canada.

I would not say there are no exemptions at all. In fact there would be exemptions available. But the problems are the remaining requirements in terms of remaining subjects/ courses to pass and the remaining Canadian experience requirement to satisfy. Therefore, eventually it would take long time and efforts to finish Canadian certification.

You have 2 options for Canadian certification i.e. (1) direct route, and (2) indirect route. To have direct route, you would have to apply for exemptions based on current qualification and start from there. For indirect route you may consider ICAEW's membership based on ICAP's membership and then apply for CICA's membership. Still you would have to pass CICA's reciprocity exam and you would have to satisfy CICA's experience requirement. Please note that you would have to satisfy ICAEW's requirements too to have ICAEW's membership in first place.

Another indirect route is to have ACCA's membership based on your current qualification and then apply for CGA's membership while living in Bahrain.

Unfortunately I don't know which State would accept CA(Pak) for exam writing eligibility these days. Each State's requirements keep changing. Please note one important issue that having at-least CPA certificate is necessary, if not the license. Passing only exams do not carry weight for employers. Exam sitting requirements and CPA certificate or license requirements are different. Transfer exam results from one State to another State after passing exams does not solve the problem as new State would evaluate credentials as of prior to writing first exam. Essence of this point is, a candidate should keep in mind the certificate requirements BEFORE appearing in first exam, not only the exam sitting requirements.

Later on even the Canadian associations require at-least CPA "certificate" in good standing, if one does not have license. They do not accept only passing CPA exams.

You may initially start reviewing requirements of 10 or 15 States where usually Pakistani candidates appear from, and then short list to 3 States. Send your documents to evaluators for at-least 3 States. Satisfy the remaining requirements of at-least "certificate" (if not license) BEFORE appearing in first exam, and then write the exams. Perhaps you may consider Delaware or Illinois to start from.

Apart from job related difficulties, you and your family would enjoy life in Canada. Objective of this thread was to educate prospective immigrants to reduce job related difficulties by planning well in advance.

I hope it helps. Keep in touch, and see you soon here.

Best Wishes

Dear All
(specially Toronto Boy)

I want to get some information about CIMA for one of my relative who has completed B.Com.
As CIMA is offering 5 exemptions to B.Commers so CIMA has become a good option for those guys who want to opt some professional accounting qualification.

My queries are as follows

1 What is criteria to avail 5 exemptions for B.Commers?

2. What is passing per centage in CIMA ?
(I have heard that CIMA's passing per centage is more than ACCA )

3. Does any regional office of CIMA exist in Pakistan ?

Kindly answer these queries as soon as possible.
