SOCIAL WORK A PROFESSION - shahnaz - 07-16-2009

The British national settled in Pakistan Chris Cork writes weekly in a Karachi daily. Since his articles are topics of daily life and nature and his own experiences hence are always very interesting. He is a social work and the concerned Daily beneath his each article introduces him as a “British social worker settled in Pakistan”. Reading his articles suggests he keeps traveling for social work alone or with some NGO and keeps constant contact with other social workers of the region. In his recent write up on 29 June 2009 he narrates his visit to Karachi Press Club. He writes how he once wrote a letter to editor to a daily when the Editor suggested him to change that in an article style and since then he keeps writing. The most important sentence from his article is that he was recently surprised that he has more income from writing than the social work.

Income from the social work? I had always thought social work was the social work which one did for any specific cause or for any specific community or even to the ordinary street man. I was working abroad where I met a small group of 10-12 people who daily in the afternoon after their jobs in groups of 2-3 visited one hospital today, the other day next day. They come to one bed, say hello hello to the patient, ask the patient how was he/she, encourage the patient praying that he/she soon will recover and go home, put the glass/towel etc right place or straighten the bed sheet/pillow. After 5 minutes talking with the patient, they will move to the other bed. They would visit 20-30 patients. If some patient desires a cup of tea or water they will buy from the canteen and then go for Mughrab Prayer and finish to visit rest of the floor/ward next day. I had thought that the social work is a God blessed bestowed quality given to only HIS selected people for serving the humanity without thinking of any benefit or reward. It is my first knowledge that the social work also brings “income”. Ansar Burni, Asma Jehangir, Mukhtar Mai, now it dawned on me how they afford today in Karachi, next day in Islamabad and then next step to Kuwait. The social worker first time dawned on me is just another profession like accountant, doctor, photographer, bus conductor etc.
