Words of "wisdom" by Dan Quayle - Odyssee - 09-19-2009

Dan Quayle was the 44th Vice President of the United States, serving under George H. W. Bush (1989–1993). He is one of the most famous misstatement makers ever. Here is a collection of some of his most notorious flubs.

"The American people would not want to know of any misquotes that Dan Quayle may or may not make."

"Every once in a while, you let a word or phrase out, and you want to catch it and bring it back. You can't do that. It's gone, gone forever."

His most famous blunder occurred when he corrected student William Figueroa's correct spelling of <b>"potato"</b> to <b>"potatoe"</b> at an elementary school spelling bee in Trenton, New Jersey, on June 15, 1992.

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."

"Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child."

"The other day [the President] said, I know you've had some rough times, and I want to do something that will show the nation what faith that I have in you, in your maturity and sense of responsibility. [Pause.] Would you like a puppy?"
