Association of Corporate Treasurers
The Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) is recognised as the worldâs leading provider of treasury education, offering specialised qualifications in treasury, risk & corporate finance. Formed to promote the study and best practice in corporate finance and treasury management, its education and examination syllabuses are recognised by both practitioners and bankers as the global standard setters for treasury education.
Together with CIMA, ACT has developed an accelerated course of study for CIMA members and students who wish to study for Associate Membership (AMCT). This will equip candidates with a broader skills base at a time when intelligent risk management is becoming increasingly important. The time that you invest will bring long term benefits to your career.
"I found the ACT qualifications very practical in nature and they complemented the more 'theory based' accountancy training. The additional depth of understanding gained, has proved invaluable in contributing to day-to-day decision making on risk and control issues"
-Robin Harris MCT, ACMA, Vice President, Credit Suisse First Boston
Although many of ACT's members are career treasurers, there are an increasing number who have sat the examinations in order to gain an additional qualification and enhance their personal development. Due to its structure and the number of exemptions gained (4½ of the seven papers) it is an ideal second qualification, with the Financial Director journal stating that "many FDs are members of the ACT and of an institute â which is a tribute to the ACT qualifications".
What do the ACT exams cover?
A modular syllabus wasintroduced in June 2005, allowing students to tailor the AMCT to their specific needs. CIMA Students and Members will automatically receive credits against the Foundation Papers and therefore only have to sit the Associate Papers to gain the AMCT. You would choose three of the five Associate Papers in one of the combinations illustrated in the table below. These ârules of combinationâ ensure that each studentâs learning includes fundamental treasury knowledge. For example, each combination dictates that all students will have studied either one or both of the Corporate Finance & Funding and Risk Management papers.

Although not compulsory, it is strongly advised that CIMA Members and Students choose a combination that includes the Corporate Finance & Funding FastTrack paper as this will reduce the amount of study from three to 2½ papers. Study is a combination of distance learning and face-to-face tuition. Exams are held every April (enrol by 30 November) and October (enrol by 31 May).
Because of the special arrangement that the ACT has with CIMA, you can enrol for the AMCT before you complete your CIMA qualification (members of other professional bodies have to wait until they have completed their exams before enrolling) but will only be allowed to use the AMCT letters once you have completed both AMCT and CIMA. In addition, no exemption fees will be charged on the 4½ papers that you do not have to sit.
With many accountants now needing to understand the management of a companyâs treasury requirements and financial risks â either through cash flows or foreign exchange rates â this is the ideal time for you to complement your CIMA qualification. Upon passing AMCT, you will then be eligible to sit the Full Membership (MCT) examinations. This is pitched at MBA level and is increasingly seen as the gateway to top level financial careers.
