First i would say its a surprise that win 2k is slow on p4. I would say first check the following
1. check your startup folder and see what kind of programs are run from it remove those which are not necessary.
2. perhaps u should download and install advanced uninstaller pro 2003 and do a little cleanup of your system. the software is trial but u can use full functionality for 20 days.
3. what kind of hard disk are u using. if its the one u got when u installed win98 then i would suggest upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive like seagate baracudda around Rs3500/20GB.
4. part of the problem lies in upgrading. i suspect u have upgraded instead of doing a clean install. if you had checked for a clean install, the installer would have installed 2k in a fresh directory. u could have then the option of dual-boot i.e win 98 (for games etc) or win 2k (for serious work) at startup. there are always problems if you upgrade an operating system as residual files remain and they cause havoc.
5. mind u that support for usb (printer, scanner, external drives including usb drives )and firewire (digital still and video cameras) is not very good in win 98 and microsoft had stopped supporting win 98. u will have difficulty in usb and firewire equipment if you have any. Also if u r doing any homenetworking then it will be a big fuss with win 98.. with xp or 2k its very easy.
6. As guybrush said u probably have ntfs which i must say u would have selected when upgrading to win2000 as it allows u to keep fat32.
ntfs and dos are not compatible therefore the command prompt u have in win2k (cmd.exe) is actually a win2k prompt not dos prompt.
if you have really decided to go back to win98 then follow these steps.
0. insert bootable CD or floppy of win 98
1. start your computer and press del or whatever key to reach your bios setup... change boot-drive sequence to removable and then fixed.
... if not so
2. boot with cdrom support enabled
3. run fdisk
4. delete all partitions (all data will be lost.. it will show unrecognised partition etc (i dont remember what it showed when i was experimenting with it <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>which u will need to delete
5. create new partition which will be a primary dos and extended partition (C,D drives etc)
6. insert win98 cd and run setup from command prompt.
7. change the boot sequence in bios (not necessary but improves boot time)
i hope it will help though ive edited it twice and still not happy with this crap )
cheers
NB. just for information.. win2k has been voted the most stable operating system for servers for couple of years now while xp is being optimised. this is the reason MS has introduced longhorn
