Cranfield MBA
Improve your management skills

CIMA members can now benefit from a new offer which helps towards obtaining an MBA. Cranfield University School of Management, a leading provider of MBA programmes nationally and outside the UK, is offering members scholarships.

CIMA candidates who meet the University’s entry requirements will be eligible to apply for a generous scholarship towards tuition fees - a significant benefit to those managers who are serious about developing themselves and improving existing performance at work.

On completing an MBA with Cranfield, graduates will be able to

show strong qualities of leadership and an understanding of a wide range of management techniques;
demonstrate a good understanding of the main functional areas of management and a knowledge of the relevant theory;
understand the importance of strategy, cross–function working and core business processes and;
display the capability to identify, analyse and implement appropriate conclusions for complex problems, in the context of uncertainty and change.

Why learn at Cranfield?
Cranfield School of Management is widely regarded as one of Europe’s best international business schools. A recent Financial Times ‘Poll of Polls’ placed Cranfield MBA in the top five programmes in Europe.

The Cranfield MBA is unique as it focuses on giving students practical skills and techniques to become better managers, all with a particular emphasis on personal development.

Cranfield holds the accreditation of AACSB (the US based International Association for Management Education), EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) and AMBA (the Association of MBAs).

CIMA is delighted to be associated with the Cranfield MBA and actively encourages members to explore this opportunity. It is an especially exciting and worthwhile prospect for members considering their CPD in terms of managerial and leadership skills.

Association of Corporate Treasurers
The Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) is recognised as the world’s leading provider of treasury education, offering specialised qualifications in treasury, risk & corporate finance. Formed to promote the study and best practice in corporate finance and treasury management, its education and examination syllabuses are recognised by both practitioners and bankers as the global standard setters for treasury education.

Together with CIMA, ACT has developed an accelerated course of study for CIMA members and students who wish to study for Associate Membership (AMCT). This will equip candidates with a broader skills base at a time when intelligent risk management is becoming increasingly important. The time that you invest will bring long term benefits to your career.

"I found the ACT qualifications very practical in nature and they complemented the more 'theory based' accountancy training. The additional depth of understanding gained, has proved invaluable in contributing to day-to-day decision making on risk and control issues"
-Robin Harris MCT, ACMA, Vice President, Credit Suisse First Boston

Although many of ACT's members are career treasurers, there are an increasing number who have sat the examinations in order to gain an additional qualification and enhance their personal development. Due to its structure and the number of exemptions gained (4½ of the seven papers) it is an ideal second qualification, with the Financial Director journal stating that "many FDs are members of the ACT and of an institute – which is a tribute to the ACT qualifications".

What do the ACT exams cover?
A modular syllabus wasintroduced in June 2005, allowing students to tailor the AMCT to their specific needs. CIMA Students and Members will automatically receive credits against the Foundation Papers and therefore only have to sit the Associate Papers to gain the AMCT. You would choose three of the five Associate Papers in one of the combinations illustrated in the table below. These ‘rules of combination’ ensure that each student’s learning includes fundamental treasury knowledge. For example, each combination dictates that all students will have studied either one or both of the Corporate Finance & Funding and Risk Management papers.

Corporate Finance & Funding FastTrack *

Liquidity Management *

*

*

Risk Management *
*
*
*
*

Financial Risk Mathematics (Certificate) *

*
*

International Cash Management (Certificate) *

Although not compulsory, it is strongly advised that CIMA Members and Students choose a combination that includes the Corporate Finance & Funding FastTrack paper as this will reduce the amount of study from three to 2½ papers. Study is a combination of distance learning and face-to-face tuition. Exams are held every April (enrol by 30 November) and October (enrol by 31 May).

Because of the special arrangement that the ACT has with CIMA, you can enrol for the AMCT before you complete your CIMA qualification (members of other professional bodies have to wait until they have completed their exams before enrolling) but will only be allowed to use the AMCT letters once you have completed both AMCT and CIMA. In addition, no exemption fees will be charged on the 4½ papers that you do not have to sit.

With many accountants now needing to understand the management of a company’s treasury requirements and financial risks – either through cash flows or foreign exchange rates – this is the ideal time for you to complement your CIMA qualification. Upon passing AMCT, you will then be eligible to sit the Full Membership (MCT) examinations. This is pitched at MBA level and is increasingly seen as the gateway to top level financial careers.

Read our three members' profiles below to discover the benefits of the ACT qualification. For full syllabus details and application forms, visit the ACT website or contact Manisha Parmar, Education Administrator, ACT, with your full postal address. ACMA( CIMA UK ) is bit tough then ACCA but its cover the big job market in uk . Manegemant Accountants r the future of business world
here is some comments of some CIMA student and mambers
which i am going to past
The CIMA Professional Qualification will give you the power to help accelerate your career.
CIMA is not just about getting your career off to a good start. If you're looking to rise rapidly through the ranks, CIMA will give you the skills to succeed at a senior level.

The skills that you develop through your CIMA study will give you a wide choice of career options. They will allow you to work in a range of different industries. Our members work in diverse areas such as business analysis, management consulting, operations management and project management to name a few. Many of the world's top Finance Directors and Chief Executives are CIMA members.

Read on to find out how these CIMA students and members have progressed their careers.

"I chose CIMA as it has a larger proportion of study focused on commercial awareness and business strategy. This is ideal for my role which has more of a commercial and marketing slant."
Marcelo Cespedes, CIMA student
Regional Finance Manager, Scotland
Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd

"It's not easy balancing the demands of work and CIMA, however the benefits are more than substantial. I find that as I progress, I draw on the knowledge I gain more and more in my current role."
Nick Shapland, CIMA student
Management Accountant
Challenge Business International Ltd.

"CIMA has enabled me to progress in finance, however, I am not constrained to finance and many of our buyers and store directors are CIMA qualified. Cross functional moves are quite common."
Jody Brabbins ACMA
Head of UK Reporting and Planning
Tesco

"I have no doubt that CIMA has been a significant help to my career. I have worked with many talented CPA's and MBA's – but I believe there is a gap inbetween these two skill sets not served by any professional organisation in the US. CPA's have to work to become business advisers, and MBA's always need to brush up on their accounting skills. CIMA members provide a unique balance of skills – good enough to prepare financial statements, and good enough to talk strategy with senior executives."
Owen Barwell ACMA
Senior Financial Adviser
NASA, USA

"I started studying CIMA with a non relevant qualification (BSc Geography), therefore my skills have grown and developed rapidly through the different levels of the qualification. I have enhanced my knowledge and developed both the practical and theoretical skills required to best contribute towards the business."
Julie Hanson ACMA
Finance Analyst
Rolls Royce

"At Microsoft, my role is as much about people as it is about profit. The CIMA qualification has given me a huge advantage because it emphasises business and people management, whilst providing a solid grounding in accounting and finance. These skills have enabled me to foster excellence and create an environment where great people can do their best work and realise their full potential."
Stephen Harvey ACMA
Director of People, Profits and Loyalty
Microsoft

"The CIMA qualification is well known and respected, and is one of the most popular overseas qualifications in Sri Lanka. As a Sri Lankan member I feel confident that I am being constantly updated on the latest developments in business. The largest benefit as an overseas member is the social and networking aspect. I actively support and advocate my staff to study CIMA."
Rajeev Aloysius FCMA
Finance Director
The Autodrome Ltd, Sri Lanka
.....
on the other hand ACA(ICAEW uk) is also batter and demanding in uk then ACCA.

IoD Diploma in Company Direction
Institute of Directors/CIMA Diploma in Company Direction
Due to the success of the first cohort of the Institute of Directors/CIMA Diploma in Company Direction, CIMA is pleased to announce details of the second cohort, which will commence in July 2005.

The corporate governance debate has meant that companies need to ensure directors – both executive and non-executive - understand and comply with the law. It is vital they are up-to-date with best practice and current business thinking. Those who are – or aspire to become – directors of organisations, are increasingly required to demonstrate that they have benchmarked their knowledge, understanding and expertise against leading edge practice.

Against this background, the Institute of Directors and CIMA have joined forces and created the CIMA Diploma in Company Direction. This qualification is specifically tailored for CIMA members at board or senior management level.

The programme reflects the issues and concerns facing CIMA members today. It covers aspects of corporate governance, directors’ responsibilities, and strategy on how to improve business performance. It also provides delegates with an excellent opportunity to meet, network with and learn from their peers in other organisations. Successful completion of the Diploma can lead on to the IoD’s professional qualification, Chartered Director, which demonstrates the ultimate in director professionalism.

To find out more about this qualification, take a look at the IoD/CIMA Diploma in Company Direction brochure, and at the latest dates for the second cohort commencing in July 2005.

For further information or to book on this programme, please email [email protected]
