For CA you have to get admission in any institute that offers CA... Since I don't reside in Lahore, I don't know the reputation of institutes there, I've only heard about SKANS, so I guess its popular...

You also have to clear a PPT (entry test) for CA if your Intermediate percentage is below 60% if i remember correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong), otherwise you don't have to give any admission test...

For Actuary, I dont know the exact intermediate percentage that is required... I guess its 80% overall and above 90% in maths... Don't know whether there are any 'proper tuition providers' for Actuary in Lahore... Since there are none in Karachi, I assume the same for Lahore...

There are two main bodies that hold Actuary examinations... Institute of Actuaries (UK) and Society of Actuaries (USA)... You have to get registered with them by your ownself... For further info visit www.soa.org.

There is also a degree programme held for Actuary in universities abroad... In Karachi, only Karachi University offers it, and that too has started recently... As far as I've dug out info, its not worth much if you do it from KU.

I dont know the exact department that is offering BSc in Actuarial Sciences in KU... The duration is from 3-4 years, the normal bachelors course duration...

The admission requirements at the time being should be pretty average as they've just started it... So you want to know the Intermediate or A levels requirement?

In Pakistan, the future prospects of those who have done BSc in Actuarial Sciences from KU cannot be assessed... They've only started their first batch... They still have a long way to go before their worth can be appraised...

No exemptions are being offered for other bachelors or masters degree holders from Pakistan.

Sumaan,

I believe 'thecharteredaccountant' recently told us on the forum that the Karachi University, who supposed to launch its undergraduate Acturial Science programme from this/last year, has decided to set-aside the initiative, due to lack of interest and perhaps resources.

Could you please tell us the FACT?

They advertised admissions for BSc in Actuarial Sciences last year as the first batch... So I don't think that they would've done it before finalising the staff... However, according to some people who went there for info, their information department was so idiotic that they could only understand the word 'Actuary' and not comprehend what 'Actuarial' meant...

PAFKIET also started their Actuarial department last year, but no one was interested in joining it so they postponed it, or atleast that was what I heard...

The baseline - Pakistan is still not ready for such things as we don't have people qualified enough to teach it... Nor would anyone plan to build a separate college/uni just for this course.

The thing that you said about actuarial education from a university.... the point is... u cant call ur self an actuary unless you are a member of the SOA or IOA or CAS... even though you have an actuarial science degree. You have to pass the exams to practice as an actuary... Its similar like CA, i.e. one studies almost all subjects in M.Com, but he wont be a CA, unless he/she is member of the ICAP, and for that you have to pass their papers.

Junaid,

Has KU arranged any exemptions for its Actuarial Science graduates from IOA and/or SOA? Please let us know the precise arrangements, if possible.

I agree with AZKS that having only the relevant accademic degree does not qualified you as an Actuary. The fact is you need to clear the relevent exams /modules from the Institute/ Society of Actuaries. Of course, you could get exemptions (upto 9 for IOA, if you have a First Class BSc. in Actuarial Science from an authorised university) but you can't get 100% exemptions from any accademia degree. You need to have a minimum amount of relevent work experience too for some charters in Actuarial Profession, e.g. FIA.

I hope it makes sense and clear any doubts.
