Joint Pak-UK airline plans flights from November
-------------------------------------------------
MEHMUD AHMED

ISLAMABAD (September 09 2004) A new airline resulting from joint Pakistan-UK investment plans flights between Islamabad and Manchester from coming November, provided Pakistan government approves the operation.

It will be a 'Combi-operation' sharing payload equally between passengers and cargo.

The carrier, known as 'Global Spirit Airlines' plans to expand operations between Pakistan and 13 other countries which the investors did not identify at the news conference here on Wednesday.

To begin with, the airline intends a twice-weekly service with a DC-10 configured at 200 passengers and 15 tons cargo. The aircraft, according to sponsors, has put in 20 years service and has airworthiness certificate. It will be called 'The Spirit of Pakistan'.

The owners of 'Global Spirit' are T & M International Group of UK which is a British-Pakistani company. The Group Chairman, Tasejad Jeffrey, said that the carrier is awaiting formal approval from Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority, pending for the last three months. Normally, such applications are responded within three weeks of submission, under Air Services Agreement.

He said he was expecting clearance shortly and to commence operations from November next, becoming "the second British national carrier" on the proposed route.

The British Airways, the UK flag carrier, already has two flights a week between Islamabad and London Heathrow airport.

Jeffrey said his Group has plans for investing £ 15 million yearly in Pakistan as his fellow investors believe that stable political climate in Pakistan is right for trade and investment. Encouraged by policies of President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, his Group has relocated its regional head office from Dubai to Karachi.

He, as well as the Group Managing Director Maisam Jeffrey, deflected questions about possible tariff which 'Global Spirit' will charge on its route by saying that the carrier would offer the businessmen "an opportunity to travel economically".

But explaining that they proposed to have two-class configuration, they added that the Nawab Class fare would be based on conventional Business Class fare and Spirit Class in line with market economy class fares.

"We do not pose a threat to any operating carrier, and have no intention to undercut." On the contrary, the Global Spirit would complement the existing schedules.

The airline also intends to re-introduce something which the other airlines have stopped doing years ago--a coach service for pick and drop services between city terminal and airport.

The T & M International Group, according to a profile, is in public relations, consultancy, marketing, import-export, cargo logistics, real estate and catering businesses.

UK firm announces investment plans
-------------------------------------
ISLAMABAD UK-based T&M International Group has announced plans to invest 15 million pound sterling a year in Pakistan and set up an airline for UK-Pakistan operations.

Addressing a press conference, Tasejad Jefrey, chairman of the group, said that the firm is committed to invest in the country and that the firm has decided to relocate its regional head office from Dubai to Karachi.

“Conventionally companies are moving into UAE, instead we are moving out giving a clear signal to the business community that Pakistan’s is open for business.” He said the group has various divisions, which include public relations and consultancy, marketing, import-export, Global Spirit Astraeus Airlines, cargo logistics, real estate and various other new divisions would be formed whilst in Pakistan.

Mr Jafrey said the company is setting up an international airline with its maiden flight between Manchester and Islamabad in full compliance of the air service agreement and UK Civil Aviation regulations.

We are bridging the air-link between the UK and Pakistan by offering business customers a world class airline which will conform to international service standards and we will offer the business community an opportunity to travel economically to Pakistan.”

He said the airline would offer two class services — First Class, being dubbed as Nawab Class, and Spirit Class with a fare structure that will be commensurate with existing operators. “Our aircraft that we operate into Pakistan will be named – The Spirit of Pakistan (Ruh-e- Pakistan) this truly reflects our company’s commitment to Pakistan,” he said.

To a question, he said the firm is currently waiting for a formal government approval and it had complied to all requirements as per the Air Services Agreement between the UK and Pakistan.

“Our application has been with the ministry of defence aviation division for over 3 months now and we patiently await a response which should have been given in 21 days as per the agreement,” he said. “We will be the second British national carrier that will operate on the route and hope to start our operations from November this year.” Mr Jeffrey said they will create employment for hundreds of Pakistanis and that they intend to increase investment into Pakistan on a yearly basis. He said the T&M International Group will have offices throughout Pakistan and will recruit Pakistanis in senior positions for all its operations. staff report

Aero firm gains spur new hires
By David Wichner
ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Tucson-based Hamilton Aerospace Technologies is accelerating hiring as it continues to land new business.

On Monday, Hamilton announced a $3 million contract to refurbish four former America West Boeing 737 jets for a Pakistani airline.

The work for Shaheen Air International and other recent contracts have boosted hiring plans Hamilton announced earlier this year.

The company had said it would hire 75 to 100 aircraft mechanics to handle new contract work, bringing its payroll to about 200 workers by year's end.

"We're at 200 now, and we're going to need another 50 people by mid-October," said Gordon D. Hamilton, a Hamilton board member. Located at Tucson International Airport, Hamilton Aerospace provides maintenance, repair and overhaul services on large passenger jets for scheduled and charter airlines and aviation leasing companies.

The contract with Shaheen Air involves heavy maintenance checks, painting and other refurbishment work on the 737s.

Hamilton, a wholly owned subsidiary of the publicly traded Renegade Venture Corp., expects to deliver the aircraft by the end of the year.

Founded in 1993, Shaheen Air operates a fleet of six aircraft with more than 30 weekly flights to 10 domestic and international destinations, including Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar, Pakistan; Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait City.

Aamer Ali Sharieff, CEO of Shaheen Air, said in a statement that the airline chose Hamilton for the contract work after airline officials visited the Tucson maintenance center.

Revenue from the latest contract already was factored into Renegade's forecast of about $20 million in revenues and $2 million in net profits for this year, Hamilton said.

For the first half of 2004, Renegade posted $1.6 million in net income on revenues of $8.6 million, compared with a net loss of about $500,000 in the first half of 2003.

"We've been focusing on this slow, steady growth, trying to be careful and making a profit," Hamilton said, noting the company would likely peak at employment of about 350 at TIA.

Hamilton Aerospace was formed after Renegade bought the assets of bankrupt Hamilton Aviation Inc. in 2002.

The company is negotiating a new, multiyear lease with the Tucson Airport Authority, Hamilton said.

In July, Hamilton acquired its neighbor at TIA, aircraft parts broker World Jet Corp., for $1.55 million.

Shares in Renegade, which earlier this year moved its corporate headquarters to Tucson from Denver, rose 2 cents Monday to close at 58 cents in over-the-counter trading.
