ur idea is good and should work.
however its the same as booting from floppy/CD. normally it should boot although it may not be able to read the hard disk.
...anyway u can try with your old harddisk.. do not forget to reassign ur 2k disk as slave.. maybe need to change the jumper.

... i once messed up with xp installation and was able to revert to win 98 although i must its all messy with 2000/XP to 98/Me/95 or vice versa.
