Difference between GST and VAT?

As such there is no difference between VAT and GST in VAT mode. The Govt. intend to implement VAT just to extend the scope of taxation on consumption. It would be better if Govt. just change the name of Sales tax despite of introducing VAT as a new tax. Moreover, our Govt. should have intimated to IMF that VAT is already enforced in form of Sales tax in Pakistan.
