Chaser,

I am speaking from personal experience, since you are relatively new to the forum let me introduce myself. I am a Big4 trained CA (Pakistan) and ACCA and have worked for Bi4s in Dubai and now in London. If you had read my earlier post carefully I have endorsed your opionion about

-the Top 20 intake
-Big4 are choosy about intake and consider graduates from top notch British Unis (and do accept foreign nationals as well, permiting their Work permits quota)
-I stand by the amount paid to first year associates (see it says over GBP 20K), you are right ACCA is sponsored too, however,in some of the firms they are paid a little less
-I in no way endorse any one to 'go' for ICAEW unless you can actually land a contract with a reasonable firm. Infact my own brother/cousin is doing his ACCA in Pakistan ! and I would not recommend him to come over to UK for that purpose.
-the so called 'window of opportunity' in UK Big4 for overseas qualified accountants has come because of SoX, IFRS and stringent regulator requirements over the last couple of years. Even so Big4 have hired from across the world primarily accountants with Big4 background and mostly where people have workeed in the Middleast, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Pakistan, India etc. I know a lot of foreigners who have joined with myself and have usually worked in more than one countries.
