Although, it is not necessarily a ‘legal entity’ (?). It does have legal standing (perhaps a legal expert can throw more light on this) and emails have been known to stand the test of evidence in Anglo Saxon Courts. There have been recent cases of civil nature where official emails have been cited as evidence against Employers alleged to be practising racial or sexual discrimination against their employees.

Of personal experience I now see clients (mostly) banks that keep records of customer complaints (via emails) as official records. Of course, there has to be a reasonable amount of IT access controls on the Email Servers
