though Security and Integration are two seperate issues but in the field of IT these two are often interconnected..I'll give an example... Person A is sending Letter to Person B and its been sent thru regular mail...Now in the above situation Mail is the integration medium to dissemenate the information between A & B. Now there could be some issues with the security of that integration medium ..for example somone might open the mail in between... in a regular mail you might use code language for this reason...the same concept is in IT ...the security of the integration medium is ensured by using the proper encryption mechanism..which in the large part are mathematical (sort of like the code language) ...and most of the time the reciever of the information already holds the decoding key to decrypt the information that is being sent by the sender through integration medium. the need/level of sophistication of the encryption highly varies as you vary your integration medium. for example if you are working in a small intra-net, with no access to internet or telnet .. then probably you dont need very sophisticated encryption... but let say that you are a global bank and your infobases are connected all over the world... and most of your information is gonna be transferred through telnet or internet or etc then you probably need very very complex encryption mechanism... according to my knowledge (correct me if I am wrong)...SWIFT ALLIANCE ..the most widely used information transfer medium in the global financial industry has 13 different levels of encryption for every single message that it transfers ...

I hope it helps...
