For me and my wife, it is an excuse to go out and do something nice for ourselves. I agree, the holiday has become hopelessly exploited by retailers, but what holliday hasn't to some degree? I think a holiday to celebrate love is a good thing.
Something interesting thing about Valentines day there was never a St. Valentine. The only historical figure in the Christian religion with that name was Valentinius, who was denounced by the church as a heretic because he created his own Christian sect outside of the established church.
