Sales Tax-payers allowed relaxation

ISLAMABAD (November 20 2002) : Relaxing Sales Tax Act, 1990 to facilitate the taxpayers, the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has directed all collectors of sales tax to accept the sales tax invoices bearing same serial numbers but having different issuance date up to November 20, 2002.

These invoices were issued by registered taxpayers engaged in the multiple business activity, says 'Sales Tax Ruling 69/2002' issued on Tuesday.

The authorities have also accepted the invoices where units have issued invoices with same serial number where alphabets specified corresponding business activity ie “Y” for yarn and “D” for dyeing etc.

Furthermore, registered persons are issuing invoices with same serial number having different dates for various commodities.

The issuance of invoices according to above-mentioned procedure is against the provisions of section 23 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, while the department has notified this relaxation due to the prevailing practice in all major cities of the country.

The CBR has further pointed out that the relaxation would only be available in cases where no serious contravention is involved and condition laid down under section 73 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 has been fulfilled.

Under the procedure, all registered persons would make purchases/supplies against progressive serial numbered invoices for the financial year, indicating full/detailed description of the goods ie quality, variety, category, count, weight, packing etc.
